Intellectual property

Intellectual Property is some thing we should understand before we write an article. Even though it is not forcefully enforced in Sri Lanka most of the other countries uses this with effective manner.

I wish our IT Pro's do understand the consequences too. So "be truthful to your self and to the others" - sharing knowledge is from what you know - not from what others have already given the links or documents.

Abstract from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property is given below.

"In law, intellectual property (IP) is an umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attach to certain types of information, ideas, or other intangibles in their expressed form. The holder of this legal entitlement is generally entitled to exercise various exclusive rights in relation to the subject matter of the IP. The term intellectual property reflects the idea that this subject matter is the product of the mind or the intellect, and that IP rights may be protected at law in the same way as any other form of property. However, the use of the term and the concepts it is said to embody are the subject of some controversy (see below).

Intellectual property laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, such that the acquisition, registration or enforcement of IP rights must be pursued or obtained separately in each territory of interest. However, these laws are becoming increasingly harmonised through the effects of international treaties such as the 1994 World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs), while other treaties may facilitate registration in more than one jurisdiction at a time. Certain forms of IP rights do not require registration in order to be enforced."

TechED 2006

So the blogs being dried-up. So I thought of writing some thing,.

TechED in 2006 is gona be a major boost for the IT sector in Sri Lanka. As far as I know (from the past experience which I had from TechEd's around Asia) it's a quite extra-ordinary atmosphere, where you will be absorbed by the excellence of technological master-pieces.

Microsoft's attention to clear the doubts of many have excelled in this fashion in the past. Even I (we) know some of the Linux giants have stepped to see what's going on in TechEd. Ohh as always, we human’s do copy some idea's (even though there is a intellectual property law in the country).

Malaysian TechEd is also starting-up in September - which I will be participating as a MVP Proctor. hhhmmmm.........strange experience but I would love to take it as it is. Microsoft sent some of the objective's they were looking from MVP Proctors. Let's see how it goes.

Anyway if you happened to be around KL or Colombo, do hop in to a MVP or the Microsoft Office to check the listing which you'll never want to miss.

Cheers !

Microsoft in Singapore
I had a rare chance to meetup with the Microsoft EPG team in Singapore. From quite a few Microsoft offices around (which I have been), Singaporian Microsoft office looks EXTRA-ORDINERY. The systematic way of handling work load is truely awesome and I wish some one of our politicians (who work for country) should see and learn from Singapore. Even though we talk much about our history (Singaporians have around 30year old history), we have never been able to move out. I am going to see a SQL UG started by a fellow MVP today. When I spoke to him he said Microsoft helps him alot, to keep the UG going. Are we getting the step-motherly treatment ?

PPT's @ Gateway

It was a small group which we have expected. But they were very enthusiastic on the subject on IT Pro track.

But unfortunately I found that these guys need more technological background. Probably they were lacking experience for level 200 presentations but clearly they do want to learn more. Ohh god that was a Q&A session which I haven't expected.

And the PPT can be downloaded @ Windows Server 2003 R2

Microsoft to 'host' Linux virtually
Source: Martin LaMonica, for News.com

Microsoft will support customers who chose to run Linux with Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 R2, software for running multiple operating systems on one machine.

In addition, the company on Monday said that it has now made Virtual Server 2005 R2--which the company had charged either $99 for up to four physical processors or $199 for an unlimited number of processors--a free download. The announcements were made in conjunction with the LinuxWorld conference in Boston this week.

Virtualization, an emerging technology which is garnering growing interest from corporate customers, allows a server to run multiple instances of an operating system. This makes it easier for corporations to consolidate many applications on a single hardware server and provides a level of reliabilty.

Microsoft said that it has developed software to simplify the installation of Linux distributions from Red Hat and Novell SuSE to run on Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows. In addition, Microsoft will provide technical support customers running Windows and Linux side by side.

"We’ve made a long-term commitment to make sure that non-Windows operating systems can be run in a supported manner, both on top of Virtual Server and our future virtualization products," said Zane Adam, director of Windows Server product marketing, in a statement.

Microsoft has said that the server edition of Windows Vista will have virtualization built into it. Specifically, it said it is developing so-called hypervisor software, code-named Viridian, to host multiple operating systems on one machine.

Microsoft faces competition in the market from EMC subsidiary VMware and increasingly the Xen project that's being built into forthcoming versions of Suse Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
