Dear all,

I am hoping to implement a NAS solution in my company with following features.

ISCSI targets

SMB

Software RAID

Mainly I target to implement ISCSI targets for the server pool because they are on Ubuntu, Redhat Linux and Windows servers.

I tested several open sourse solutions like Openfiler and FreeNAS. They are successful but I'm more into Microsoft and love to implement a NAS solution on Microsoft platform.

In windows we can implement RAID and folder shares but i couldn't find a solution to implement a windows server as ISCSI target server. There is one option like "Windows Storage Server 2008" but it says we have to buy it from a OLE partner like HP/DELL.

But i was hoping to implement this on a regular computer with serveral hardisks attached to it and configure RAID5 and on that configure a ISCSI target server.

Can some one help me to sort this out.

Thanks in advance..

Tharaka

Hi Tharaka,

First of all welcome to the forum Big Smile (since this is your first post)

Now getting back to your question. "Windows Storage Server 2008" is a good option but as you have stated it's comes with OEM. What you can do it is consider a third party software like "StarWind iSCSI SAN software". More information is available in here. You'll get all the witepapers and step-by-step guide to setup the NAS box up and running quickly.

By the way I assume you have pre planned the proper hardware and networking setup for this. Since you're going to use exiting hardware from scratch you have need to do proper planning how your data transfer travel in the LAN. Try to have separate LAN connection with GIGAbit Ethernet for the SAN communication. Anyway complete guides are available in the relevant web site I mentioned. Look forward to hear from you about your progress.

Cheers,

Susantha
