Windows Server 2008 R2 without Hyper-V

Hi,

We have purchased a dedicated server in US. We required "Windows 2008 R2 Standard" to be installed in it. But now we see "Windows 2008 R2 Standard without Hyper-V" is installed in it.

We would like to install some VMs so that we need the Hyper-V role.

Is it possible to seperately download Hyper-V role into "Windows Server 2008 R2 without Hyper-V Edition" ??

Hi Gkssroot,

Legally this is not possible due to what mention over here. You have mentioned this is a dedicated serve, assuming this server is dedicated for visualization purpose then download the HYPER-V only version and install it. But you have to notice about the licensing and you need to purchase license for each VM. Hope that clarifies your question.

Thanks for the info. Yes I understand the licensing requirements of child VPS inside one physical host.

So u mean that Hyper-V component can be downloaded seperately and installed into "Windows Server Without Hyper-V " Edition ??

what "Bubble" ment was that you can download a free version of Hyper-V called "Hyper-V Server 2008 R2". this is a core version of Windows Server 2008 R2 which contains only Hyper-V Role. so it's not an addition that can be installed on top of Windows Server - without Hyper-v but needs to be installed as a seperate operating system. however, the operating system is FREE. this operating system will act as the base and for any additional virtual machine that you install you will have to buy licenses.

eg - Hyper-V Server 2008 R2(OS FREE) = Buy license for each Virtual Machine

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard = 1 Virtual Machine FREE + Buy license for additional machine

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise = 4 Virtual Machines FREE +Buy license for additional machine

Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter = Unlimited number of Virtual Machines FREE
